Opportunities for Week of August 15

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL

Pastor Danny will continue the informal Q & A sessions Sunday, August 22.  Earlier we discussed who we are and what our image is in the community.  He is open to addressing any point of interest that would serve to benefit the body.  He also wishes to address who we are in light of the mission of First UMC and how we make our mission statement of “Knowing Christ, Growing in Christ, Sharing Christ” translate into action.

 PRAYER IN THE CHAPEL

Weekly prayer in the chapel will begin this Thursday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.  Any and all are welcome to join us for prayer.  Come just as you are and stay as little or as long as you like.  Pray as the Spirit directs you.  Leaders will be present should you need someone to pray with you.  Our goal is to provide a sanctuary for prayer and an atmosphere that encourages conversations with God.

 CARE FOR THE LITTLE ONES

Our youngest members are looking for loving hands and hearts to help with their care on Sunday mornings, especially during the 8:30 service.  If you can serve in the nursery occasionally, please contact Angela Haltigan at 341-8321 or call the church office to volunteer.

 PROMOTION SUNDAY

Join us in the fellowship hall for singing with Scott and stories with Laurie.  Meet your Sunday School teachers and find out about the fun things planned for this year.  Classes will be provided for children ages 3 and up.  Junior and Senior High classes will kick-off upstairs in their Sunday School rooms.

DO YOU HAVE A 3RD GRADER?

NEW CIRCLE FOR MOTHERS OF TEENAGERS

 FALL BIBLE STUDIES

Three new studies begin in September.

“Invitation to the New Testament”  (One opening remains).   Charles Smith leads this 8-session study using Matthew’s Gospel and other New Testament readings to ask “Who is Jesus and what is his significance for our lives?”  This study, restricted to 12 students, begins with a picnic and orientation session at the home of Charles and his wife, Barbara, on Monday, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. and classes will begin on Monday, September13 at 7:00 p.m.  Study books are available in the church office at a cost of $11.00.  Participants will need a good study Bible, preferably the Oxford Annotated’s NRSV.   Call the church office or sign up for the last slot on the sheet in the hallway.

The next 2 studies, which are being held on Sunday evenings, will be preceded by dinner-for-a-donation at 6:00 p.m. for anyone who wants to come early for food and fellowship.

“The Magnificent Obsession”, written by Anne Graham Lotz, is a 7-week study  of the life of Abraham.  It will lead us into a God-filled life where we dig deep into the treasures of the Bible and truly grow to know God.  We will begin Sunday, September 19th and finish November 7th (taking October 31st off), meeting from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.  Each Sunday we will meet in small groups to discuss homework and prayer requests, then meet together to watch a 30-minute DVD teaching by Anne Lotz.   Sign up by Sept. 2nd in the church office or on the sheet in the hallway.  Cost is $10.00 which covers the cost of workbook and should be given to Lyda or Eleanor in the church office prior to Sept. 2nd.  Questions – contact Beth Page – 946-4385 or bethpage5@gmail.com

“Going Public with Your Faith” is a 5-week CD series from Chip Ingram and Living on the Edge Ministries.  We are all called to “tell it, not sell it”.  In “Going Public with Your Faith”, learn how even you can move from being a “secret agent” Christian to a “public” witness as you develop the heart, skills and perspective to naturally share Christ as a part of your lifestyle and relationships.

This series includes the following messages:

  • How to Prepare for Your “Spiritual IPO”
  • Exposing the Five Myths of Evangelism
  • Building Bridges to Eternity
  • How to Share Your Story
  • How to Tell His Story

Class should last for 60 – 90 minutes.  Class begins on Sunday, September 26th at 6:30 p.m.  There is no book and no cost, but please call the church office by Sept. 12th to register or sign up on the sheet in the hallway.  Questions?  Call Cherri Howdy at 946-4837 or chowdy@suddenlink.net

 HAND-IN-HAND

On August 25th bells will ring to signal the beginning of another school year.  Children at John Cotten Tayloe are excited about this new beginning.  In the past, we have supported the children with collecting book bags, but they are not needed this year.  Other items are needed so that each child can begin the year with a feeling that he/she is READY!  The items are:  tissues, sanitizers, Chlorox wipes, pencils and erasers (the pencil top kind), wide-ruled notebook paper, crayons (16 or 24 count), zip lock bags of any size, and zippered pencil holders.  A large purple tub in the office hallway is available for collecting items.  Thank you so much for your support of our Hand-in-Hand program and John Cotten Tayloe.  You DO make a difference!  Don’t forget to give Pam Huss at 923-0891 or Jane Griffin at 946-6129 a call to say you will be a “prayer partner” or that you would like to volunteer for the Great Leaps program.

Please join us for coffee, snacks, and fellowship in the fellowship hall following the 8:30 service
